How to Vet a Metal Roofing Contractor: The 15-Minute Checklist

A metal roof is less forgiving than shingles. Fasteners torqued wrong, panels cut with the wrong tool, flashing improvised at a valley — mistakes that a shingle roof absorbs will telegraph through a metal roof as oil-canning, leaks, and voided material warranties. The contractor matters more than the material.
Here's the vetting sequence, in the order that eliminates candidates fastest.
1. Verify the license yourself (one minute)
Never accept a screenshot or a number printed on a business card. Go to your state's official lookup and search the license number:
- Florida: every legitimate roofer holds a DBPR license — CCC (certified, works statewide) or RC (registered, specific local jurisdictions). Check that the status is current and active and the name matches the business quoting you.
- California: look for the C-39 roofing classification on an active CSLB license. California also requires every C-39 contractor to carry workers' compensation — the lookup shows it.
- Texas: there is no state roofing license. Anyone can legally sell you a roof. That makes the rest of this checklist do the work the state doesn't: look for the voluntary RCAT credential, insurance certificates, and a physical local address.
If the license is expired, suspended, or under a different business name than the contract — stop. Nothing else on this list matters.
2. Ask for metal-specific evidence
A general roofing license doesn't distinguish a shingle crew from a standing-seam specialist. Evidence that actually means something:
- Manufacturer or industry credentials in metal specifically — membership or certification tied to metal systems, not a generic "preferred contractor" badge for asphalt shingles.
- A metal job portfolio — addresses or photos of standing-seam or metal shingle installs they did, in your area, that you could drive past.
- The right vocabulary. Ask what panel profile and gauge they'd use and why, how they handle expansion and contraction, and whether trim and flashing are shop-bent or field-bent. A metal specialist answers without hesitating.
3. Read the quote like an inspector
- Tear-off or overlay? The quote should say explicitly, with disposal included.
- Underlayment named — brand and type, not "felt as needed."
- Fastener system specified — exposed-fastener versus concealed (standing seam) is the single biggest cost and longevity difference in metal roofing, and the quote should make it unmistakable.
- Flashing detail at valleys, penetrations, and walls listed as line items, not lumped.
- Payment schedule tied to milestones. Walk away from anyone wanting most of the money before material hits your driveway.
4. Red flags that end the conversation
- Door-knocking right after a storm and offering to "handle the insurance."
- Pressure to sign today for a "crew in the area" discount.
- No physical address, or a truck with no company name.
- A quote wildly below the others — in metal, that's usually the exposed-fastener system quoted against standing-seam bids, or a crew learning on your house.

5. Then get three quotes anyway
Even a contractor who passes everything above should be compared against two more who also pass. You're not just comparing price — you're comparing panel systems, warranties, and how each one explains the same roof. The one who educates you the best usually installs the best.
